In recognition of the diversity of the San Remo Foreshore Reserve, the vegetation, and the expectations of the community, the Committee of Management have notionally divided the Reserve into four distinct precincts as illustrated.
The Western Port Precinct
Western Port precinct begins on the coast, west of Potters Hill Road (below Silverwater Resort) and continues until Back Beach Road. The Committee manages and oversees weed control in this area, which is currently only accessible at low tide and is intended to one day form part of the San Remo Walking Circuit.
The Jetty Precinct
The Jetty precinct continues from Back Beach Road around the coast and concludes at the San Remo Fisherman’s Co-Op and Jetty. It includes the coastal path, the childrens’ playground, public toilets, the fishermans’ monument, BBQ and picnic shelters, the grassed area and wall where the pelican feeding is held, and the beach-side car parks. Other land managers within this area include VicRoads, the Bass Coast Shire Council, Parks Victoria and the Fishermans’ Co-Op. The Jetty precinct has by far the most users, with a significant number of people coming to watch the pelican feeding each day. This precinct is a priority for the committee, which is currently working with key stakeholders to explore the best management options for the whole area.
The Eastern Passage Precinct
This precinct begins at the jetty in front of the Fishermans’ Co-Op and continues up the rise, around the rock wall, along Back Beach and concludes at the stairs up to the Foots Beach pathway. This area includes interpretative signage detailing some history of the area, seating and paths, stairs and walkways.
The Bass Strait Precinct
This is a large parcel of land that extends from the stairs at Back Beach, both up the hill and along the coast, right the way along to Bore Beach. Most of this precinct is only accessible at low tide and is a popular spot for paleontologists, fishermen and surfers. The committee would one day like to see this area forming part of the San Remo Walking Circuit. Until this eventuates, a maintained path provides access to a lookout over Foots Beach.
This is part of the Eastern Passage Precinct, but due to its size, usage and particular maintenance requirements, it has an individual focus within the committee.
